Historical or Biographical Information

Genoveva Barrera Leach was born September 13, 1916 to Horacio F. Barrera and Sofia Garcia Barrera at Cibolo Ranch in Duval County, Texas. She was delivered by her grandmother, Maria Virginia Salinas Garcia. Genoveva was a descendant of Jose Vasquez Borrego, Rancho De Delores, 1750. She graduated from Premont High School at age 16 and from Texas College of Arts and Sciences in 1941. Genoveva known as "Ginny" taught at Cibolo Ranch, La Copita, and Premont Schools. She was a Charter member of St. Theresa's Women's Club, past member of the Elevian Club, avid bird watcher, reader, genealogist, and a local historian. Genoveva Barrera married John Michael Leach who worked in the oil fields. They had one son, John Michael II, and three daughters, Mary Virginia, Cecilia, and Elizabeth Sophia. Genoveva had a talent for telling family and historical stories. Genoveva passed away on April 4, 2011 at the age of ninety-four.

Scope and Content

Genoveva Barrera Leach loved learning and teaching. This collection depicts the times she lived with photographs, negatives, correspondence and publications of journals she enjoyed reading. The South Texas Archive's "Oral History and Folklore Collection" includes an oral history interview of Genoveva Barrera Leach.
