Stevens G. Herbst is an alumnus of the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering at Texas A&I University/Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He studied under Dr. Dotterweich who was a pioneer in natural gas engineering and laid the foundation for the college as its founder. Dotterweich influenced many engineering students with his teaching, counsel, and leadership. After graduation, Herbst became an engineer and later created his own business, Rainbow Investments Company in Corpus Christi. He was instrumental in honoring Dr. Dotterweich’s legacy with the memorial project. He underwrote and guaranteed the funding for the project of the creation of a life size bronze statue by Armando Hinojosa of Dr. Dotterweich.

Scope and Content

The collection contains six series. The first series is correspondence, documents and news articles concerning the name change of Texas A&I University to Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 1993. The second series is correspondence and financial records that tell the events of the changing of the name of the College of Engineering to the Frank Dotterweich College of Engineering and the creation, funding and delivery of the bronze statue of Dr. Dotterweich as a memorial in 2011. The third series is photographs of Dotterweich and the bronze statue creation. The fourth series is Lantana Memorabilia. The fifth series includes engineering publications and the sixth series includesAbstract of Title describing land in Mathis, Herbst's wife's family once owned.
