Lawrence John Elling was born in April of 1915 to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Elling in Vattman, Texas. He died in 1998 at the age of 83. Elling who was born and raised in South Texas, was an engineering graduate of Texas College of Arts and Industries (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville.) He received his BS in 1946 and his MS in 1953. He worked for Houston Gas and was ultimately Chief Design Engineer for Entex in Houston. In 1947 he married Mary Elizabeth born in 1917 in Haleyville, OK. She and her family moved to Texas in 1929. Mary Elizabeth and Lawrence had one son, John. She passed away in 2003.
Included in the collection are 245 photos, copies of Elling's term papers from Texas A&I, correspondence, maps, graduation certificates, a Hutchinson Calculator, a marriage license, and funeral cards for the Elling-Filla family of Vattman, Texas. Many of the early photographs are of families from Vattman, Texas in the first half of the 20th century.
