Historical or Biographical Information

C.V. (Van) Mooney graduated from the engineering program at then Texas College of Arts & Industries in 1942 and attended the University of Oklahoma-Norman for his Masters of Engineering. He worked as a petroleum engineer for the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Bartelsville, Oklahoma and served in the U.S. Navy before returning to TCAI as a professor in the engineering department where he worked on research with Dr. Frank Dotterweich. He became chair of the Chemical and Natural Gas engineering Department in 1958 and served in that position until his retirement in 1988. The Gas Engineering Department gained national and even international acclaim for its innovative program in gas engineering. It was the only accredited program in gas engineering for many years. Upon retirement he continued to serve as a consultant for area gas companies including Mobil Oil Corp., Small Gas Utilities in Texas, Rio Grande Valley Gas Company, Coastal States Gas Production Company and for the Danish government. He was selected for membership in the Technical Pipeline Safety Standards Committee of the Department of Transportation in 1980. His special expertise was in the area of natural gas distribution and design.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of professional papers on chemical and natural gas engineering, correspondence, and reports he submitted to the Railroad Commission of Texas and the Department of Transportation Technical Pipeline Safety Standards Committee. Photographs of a camper that caught on fire are included.
