Dr. Julian Jay Schreur was born January 19, 1939, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Neal Schreur and Wilma Schreur. He graduated from Kalamazoo College in Michigan with a B.A. in physics. He then studied at the Friedrich-Willhelm University in Bonn, Germany for one year. He attended the University of Arizona where he earned a doctorate in astronomy in 1971. He was an instructor of astronomy for two years at Wellesley College. For a number of years he taught physics at Pan American High School then became a physics professor and astronomer at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 2001. Dr. Schreur married Barbara Schreur who was a professor in the electrical engineering / computer science department at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. They had two sons, George and Alex. During his time at A&M-Kingsville, Schreur worked to improve the astronomy program. He was instrumental in upgrading the 16 inch telescope on the roof of Hill Hall from a mechanical machine to an automated research instrument. Dr, Schreur was also responsible for much of the physics’ department’s outreach program, organizing many open houses and telescope parties where people from the university and community were invited to witness specific events such as comets and eclipses. He helped to start the Kingsville Astronomical Society in 2000. Dr. Schreur studied violin while in high school and was a member of the Kingsville Music Club. On November 3, 2001 Dr. Schreur died in Houston due to complications after a liver transplant. He had been treated successfully for liver disease for twenty-two years and never allowed his condition to stop him from accomplishing his goals.
Two presentation papers, “Scattering and the Paint Spread Function of the NGST,” and “Segmented Mirror Image Degradation due to Surface Dust, Alignment and Figure,” for the NASA ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship meeting in July of 1999 are part of Dr. Schreur’s papers. Annual reports, certificates for the Mentorship Program, and Music Club publications are included. Dr. Schreur and Dr. Burgin Dunn captured images from the 16 inch telescope and are included in the S. Burgin Dunn Collection.
The papers are arranged in chronological order.
