Sidney Burgin Dunn, originally from Miles, Texas attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas where he completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He was awarded a Physics scholarship from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and received a Master of Science Degree in Physics in 1934. From 1942 to 1947 Dr. Dunn was commissioned in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He served as a instructor of the Navy Radio Material School at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. He returned to Texas in 1947 to attend the University of Texas to work towards a Ph. D. in Physics. Burgin Dunn taught at Southwestern University from 1934 to 1942, the University of Texas from 1947 to 1950, San Angelo College from 1950 to 1952 and in 1956 he became an Assistant Professor at Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville) where he taught first and third level physics classes. In 1971 Professor Dunn was named a fellow of the Texas Academy of Science He served as the advisor of the Rawls Memorial Amateur Radio Club since its inception in 1975. Dunn's second marriage was to Beth Stites in San Angelo, Texas on December 24, 1954. During his first marriage he and his wife had four sons, Samuel Burgin, Claud Howard, Ben Scott, and David Richard. He retired from Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 1979. In November of 1982 a former student and his wife, Barrett W. and Carol A. Pierce honored Professor Dunn with a donation to the Alumni Association's Annual Alumni Fund for Excellence establishing the "S. Burgin Dunn Physics Scholarship." Dunn and his family attended the First United Methodist Church in Kingsville. He had nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, he was 91 years old.
The collection includes class materials from Burgin Dunn's physics classes, correspondence, resumes, awards, certificates, and astronomy photographs taken from the telescope at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
