Historical or Biographical Information

Kathryn Roberts Fugate Evans came to Kingsville as a four year old in 1926 and grew up among the early settler who came here when the railroad opened up South Texas. She attended public schools and graduated from Texas A&I College in Kingsville with a degree in journalism. After her four children, Anne, Lee, John, and Sam were in school, she began teaching English. She taught for twenty-one years. On April 15, 2001, she began a series of columns in the "Kingsville Record and Bishop News" entitled "Come Aboard" to remind old-timers, inform newcomers, and hopefully to pique the interest of youth about the early history of Kingsville as the town's 100th birthday was approaching on July 4, 2004. Her civic concerns include First United Methodist Church, Kingsville Woman's Club, Kleberg County Historical Commission, Chamberlain Cemetery Board, and Kleberg County Heritage Foundation. The foundation was instrumental in restoring the old railroad depot in downtown Kingsville. (From: About the Author in the "Come Aboard" book.)
