Caption: The Riherds built an upper story onto their building at 124 East Oleander in La Feria in order to live near their plant and keep an almost hourly check on thier stock of looper larvae. Isolation ward is beyond carport. Riherd continues his work as entomologist for a flying service while Mrs. Riherd tends "the livestock." Last year Riherd manufactured enough of the looper virus to treat more than 700 acres of cabbage in the Rio Grande Valley.

Caption: Frances Phillipp of La Feria says he wouldn't grow another crop of cabbage if he couldn't have the virus spray to combat the loopers with. he plans to spray Septembers plantings at ten days, three weeks and at heading time. Even the rains don't bother the virus spray, he says, may even help spread it across the fields. |

photo of Land intended for cucumbers needs to be in good condition for quick growth. But the flower - bed mulch on the land is its own worst enemy in the early spring along the coast where the vine crops do best. terraced lands, contours, nor rough bedded are immune to the effect of the winds which come before and during planting and growing season. |
