Betsy Mantar (left), Mary Lewis Kleberg (center) and unknown woman in costume sitting in garden. Note: “Then 3 outfits came from a tomb out in the King Ranch—The furs were peacock feathers. Mrs. ? picked up a few story pieces day later in the yard. The bush behind the girl in a pomegranate, if I remember the 2 seated dresses were in blue with pink accents and of course were of the era when clothes were elegant and lovely. The dress that ? wore on the left was white.” |

Frances Flato wearing flapper style dress. Note: “Black beads in strings made quite a dress which was just below the knees. This gal really dressed up and wore the rolled stockings so much the rage in this ? and she did the Charleston at every opportunity. The black ? headdress does not show up very well ?? does the long cig. Holder and bead bag” |

?, Anne Marie Hope and Faye Bible (l-r), sitting in garden in costume. Note: “Taken beside the guest room with several ? on the right shows same shoes. Ones on right have painted toes about 3 inches longer than the feet and came out of the Home Economics Dept. Museum. Anne in center wore beautiful high-laced shoes which squeaked with every step. Another good view of girls showing how coarse the blades are.” |

Stella Fimble and Ellen Douglas Simms in photo with nine other women. Unclear on identification. Note: This is the picture that was in the paper. The girl standing in the 1901 dress looked grand in the green color. She stole the show though by having divided drawers underneath and I’m sure almost everyone saw things well as the dress. It was too that she said to wear the petticoat that went with the outfit.”

Mackie Smith (l) and June Dotterweich (right). Note: Mrs. Smith and I in our outfits on the front steps waiting to great the guests. Note hands on me which was spiral for the occasion. The background shows our front door with carpet grass, jasmine and fern up the latticework and leaves of the mesquite tree hanging down.

Ellen Douglas Sims (right) Polly Arthur (sitting) in garden. Note: The stones we made from cement show up well here and you can about see the pattern. The one dress has been described. The one on the right was worn in a wedding 20 years ago and was a heavenly blue with pink hat-gloves-shoes and fan which had been in the same wedding. These 2 dresses were some of the prettiest there. |

Mackie Smith (standing on left with hand raised), June Dotterweich, ?? , ?? (on steps) and Edith Cousins (far right). Note: “One of the choice groups—not the prettiest. Mrs. Smith, I, then a flapper fan in peach—an old time bathing suit in green and black complete with stockings, shoes, cap and pants and then the bloomer girl. Note hair bun tied in back which sticks out but on either side.” |

Merle House (seated), Mrs. Muil, Margaret Bailey and Margaret Johnson (right). Note: Under the Huisache (? ?) tree with Oleanders behind them. The linen duster in the left was made of the most gorgeous linen I’ve ever seen and when she arrived she had the veil tied down securely. The woman in the middle had on her high school graduation dress of many years ago. The ? in the night was quite an old timey one.”

Eight women seated in garden. Standing in back Marilyn Simons (second from left) Seated (l-r) Rosemary Scales, Mackie Smith, Agnes Meek, June Dotterweich. Note: Picture of the 2 hostesses and the house party with oleanders and ginger as background. Taken after the party you can see the fatigue in everyone’s faces. We tried to have each one hold a glass to show off the “Chumy plumplate” and a good many still had on the gardenias we gave to each member of the house party.” |

Polly Arthur (left), Jean Ledderer (?) and Stella Fimble (right) in garden. Note: Posed on the patio you get a good feeling of the depth ? the ? behind these people. The middle dress was ginger ? lace and ? pleated silk and the dress was supposed to have been a real Parisian model. The silk was so old they had to store it by loo? Down the back so Jean had an inch gap of ? down to her waistline in the back.” |

Rosemary Scales, Anne Marie Hope and Mattie Gaston (right). Note: These beautiful dresses of the same vintage. Dress on left was hand embroidered and eyelet lace with aquamarine underslip—but on right was fuchsia color dress white can you see the lonznette? Bushes in background are that salt cedar I’m always talking about. |
