This photograph was perhaps taken in Falfurrias, Texas or Mission, Texas during the early 1900's before the Vicente Salazar family settled in Kingsville, Texas in 1919. It is interesting to note that what appears as a street sign in the photograph says, " El 5 de abril - V. Salazar". Vicente Salazar was born on April 5, 1860! Jose Salazar, Vicente Salazar's son, is the person holding the reins of the horse pulling the cartwheel wagon. The children are not identified. Vicente Salazar is the second person standing from the right, being the only man standing, who is not wearing a hat or a dress coat. The other men in the photograph are not identified either.

This photograph was taken at the V. Salazar Store sometime in the 1930's by the side entrance of the building facing 6th Street between East Richard Street and East Santa Gertrudis Street in Kingsville, Texas. The young man standing inside the large rubber boot is not identified. He is washing the vehicle which has a Texas license plate from 1937. Jose Salazar, who was in his 40's at the time is the person holding the side of the canopy. The man wearing the black hat, white shirt, and dark slacks in the photograph is unidentified. This wall calendar was given at Christmas time to customers of the V. Salazar Store as a gift for the year of 1957. At one time many businesses, particularly those in small towns or cities, would give calendars for the New Year as gifts of appreciation at Christmas time or fairly close to the start of a new calendar year. This custom was a form of advertising for the businesses and is still used by not only businesses, but by different types of organizations. |

One of the envelopes in the photograph was part of the stationery collection printed for the V. Salazar Store. Since the Salazar Store offered credit to its customers, the clerks would write up the items being bought on a credit receipt as shown in the photograph. This particular receipt shows items purchased on May 19, 1959. At that time, it only cost 18 cents to buy 3 apples!!! |
