These colts were born last spring and are now 6 to 9 mths. old. These colts are gentle broke and when introduced to cow work must have a natural instinct to follow a cow the same as a dog would have for a colt, if not then the colts are quickly sold. When a mare has proven herself as a good cow horse, she is used for a brood mare. They don’t wait till she breaks down but use her in her prime.

These colts are rounded up each week. They teach them to lead and eat oats. They pick up their feet and otherwise handle them. The purpose of all this is to gentle the colts so that when they are ready to be broken they are not so hard to handle.
