Tray 2. 1973. Oil Production in the Los Angeles Basin. Slides 1-42. the Los Angeles Basin is one of the most prolific oil producing basins in the world, but it also happens to be one of the most populous. These color slides show how badly needed oil can be extracted from urban drill sites right in the middle of the city, without making a mess of things. One of the first attempts to sound proff drill sites in the Los Angeles Basin. Jude Oil Company's drill site near the "Farmer's Market" Los Angeles (Note soundproff derrick.) Wells are directionally drilled beneath Los Angeles from this drill site.

The Wilmington Oil Field at Long Beach is not only the largest oil field in the Los Angeles Basin, but in terms of daily oil production (190,967 barrels, as of June, 1972) it is the largest oil field in the United States. Gross oil revenues to the City of Long Beach and the State of California in fiscal year 1971-72 were $63.9 million. It is estimated that approximately $920 million in oil revenue will be realized over the next thirty-five years from the Long Beach oil operations, with this money being shared by the City of Long Beach and the State of California. The easterly (offshore) extension of the Wilmington Oil Field is being developed by the directional drilling from four man-made islands in Long Beach Harbor, named after the four astronauts that died at cape Kennedy; Islands Grissom, White, Freeman, and Chaffee. Island Grissom, aerial view. The islands were constructed in 30 to 40 feet of water at a cost of $2 million each.
