Irma Salazar, Jose and Amelia Salazar's daughter, at age 1. She is sitting in her brother's (Rolando) wooden rocking horse that had been made especially for Rolando. The teddy bear in the picture was one of Irma's favorite stuffed toy animals. The picture was taken in the front yard at Petra Salazar's house where Irma lived from birth until she was 13 years old.

Ramon Perez Jr. and Irma Salazar sitting on the front porch of their grandmother's (Petra Salazar) house at 204 E. Richard in the late 1940's. Ramon Jr. and Irma were Vicente and Petra Salazar's youngest grandchildren. Ramon designed and built the fireplace in 2016 that is now part of the patio next to the V. Salazar Building. The house that was originally built at 204 E. Richard on what is currently (2017) part of the patio and parking lot of the V. Salazar Building was demolished in the 1970's.

Irma Salazar, Jose and Amelia Salazar's daughter, enjoying her rocking chair that was placed on the sidewalk leading to her grandmother's (Petra Salazar) house for this picture. Irma always had a pair of guaraches ( Mexican sandals) to wear in the summertime. The rocking chair was reupholstered and has been enjoyed by Irma's children and grandchildren.

Irma Salazar, Jose and Amelia Salazar's daughter, standing in her grandmother's (Petra Salazar) front yard. The white stucco building shown on the left side was the V. Salazar Store. The side entrance to the store was mainly used by the Salazar family and the store employees. It was customary that many of the Salazar family members would visit the store to purchase their groceries on Saturdays.

Irma Salazar, daughter of Jose and Amelia Salazar, pictured on her 6th or 7th birthday. The jumper that she is wearing was worn during the previous school year as a school uniform worn with a white blouse. Irma attended St. Martin's Catholic School in Kingsville, Texas from kindergarten through the 8th grade. The uniform was changed from a maroon jumper and white blouse to a maroon gabardine skirt and a white blouse for students in the upper grades. The boys' uniforms were khaki pants, khaki shirt and a black tie.

Irma Salazar, age 5, daughter of Jose and Amelia Salazar, and granddaughter of Vicente Salazar Sr. is sitting on the ledge of a display window of the V. Salazar Store. This side of the store building faced 6th Street where it intersected East Richard Street. Irma lived from birth until she was 13 years old with her parents next door to the V. Salazar Store along with her grandmother, Petra P. Salazar. Irma spent many hours in the store building as she was growing up, especially during the summer months.

Irma Salazar, age 6, standing with her paternal grandmother, Petra P. Salazar. The photograph was taken after Irma made her first Holy Communion at St. Martin's Catholic Church in May 1951. Both framed photographs in the picture are of Rolando Salazar, Irma's brother. One picture was taken when Rolando graduated from H.M. King High School in Kingsville, Texas and the other picture was taken when Rolando served in the United States Marine Corps.

Irma always wore her long hair braided until she was in the 6th grade when she finally convinced her parents to cut her hair shorter and got a permanent!

Her father, Jose, could be seen on most business days wearing a white shirt - either short or long sleeve - depending on the time of the year - but always with a tie as shown in this photograph.

This photograph taken in March 1956 depicts a typical Friday night in the kitchen of Petra Salazar, sitting at the table, with her daughter-in-law, Amelia Salazar, standing and her granddaughter, Irma Salazar. Since Amelia was a public school teacher during the week, Friday night was always designated as Amelia's night to bake, which was one of Amelia's hobbies. Whomever visited the Salazar household over the weekend was in for special homemade baked treats of cakes, cookies, or sweet empanadas.

Salazar Store building along 6th Street at its intersection with East Richard Street in Kingsville, Texas. At that time, 6th Street was also State Highway 77 running north and south through the city of Kingsville as the main thoroughfare connecting towns and cities north of Kingsville to the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas.

Advertisements for beverages and other products were often painted on the outside of businesses when this photo was taken in 1950. The advertisement on the building was for Coca-Cola. Pictured left to right, Reymundo Perez, his mother, Florencia (Lencha) S. Perez was one of Vicente Salazar's daughters; center, Isabel Salazar, Nicolas Salazar's wife; on the right side, is Rolando Salazar, Jose Salazar's son. Standing in the front center is Irma Salazar, Jose Salazar's daughter. Irma somehow managed to be around when it was picture taking time for the Salazar family.

A dinner celebration at the home of Petra (Mama Petrita) Salazar. The celebration was probably around Easter time because of the Easter lilies displayed on the dinner tables. Pictured left to right around the dinner tables are: Mario Javier Salazar, Isabel Salazar, Nicolas Salazar, Jose Salazar, Amelia Salazar, Rolando Salazar, Francisca Salazar, Eduardo Salazar - behind Francisca Salazar, Petra Salazar - in black dress, Florentina S. Ramirez, Pedro Ramirez - only head showing, Florencia S. Perez, Ramon Perez Sr., Concepcion (Conchita) Perez, and Reymundo Perez. The two children standing on the left side are: Irma Salazar and Ramon Perez, Jr. Special holidays were always celebrated with a family meal at the home of Mrs. Petra Salazar, Vicente Salazar Sr.'s widow. The home was located next to the V. Salazar Store building. The meal celebrations were held while most of the children of Vicente and Petra Salazar were still living and in good health. The family gatherings took place until the late 1950's when Jose and Amelia Salazar moved into their own home. Jose and Amelia had lived with his mother, Petra Salazar, since Jose and Amelia's marriage in 1944.

This photograph took place in front of the V. Salazar Store . The young ladies in the photo were the salespersons in the clothing department of the store. On the left is Ercilia (last name is not recalled) and on the right is Maria Flores. The person standing behind the ladies and placing "bunny ears" on their heads is Rolando Salazar, Jose Salazar's son. Rolando also worked at the store beginning at a young age as a stock boy, then driving the store truck delivering groceries, and finally as a store clerk whether selling groceries or clothing. He worked at times when he wasn't in school as a young boy, or when he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, or when he attended Texas A&I (now TAMUK) and graduated from the university.

The monument was built in the 1930's in San Antonio, Texas by Rodriguez Brothers Marble and Granite Memorials. The original monument company was established in 1920 in the Prospect Hill neighborhood near Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas

St. Martin's Catholic Church Altar Society, Kingsville, Texas. This photograph was taken in the mid- 1950's. Pictured in the center front row in the black nun's habit is Sister Maria del Espiritu Santo, a member of the DMPVM religious order which served at St. Martin's Catholic Church parish and school. Members of the V. Salazar family in this photograph are: Isabel Salazar, first person on the left side of the second row; Amelia Salazar, fourth person from the beginning of the right side of the second row; and Florencia S. Perez, the third person standing on the left side of the third row. This organization's main goal was to provide the necessary articles for the church altar to be used during Masses and other church celebrations. Providing clean linens for and the general upkeep of the altar and its surrounding area was an additional responsibility. Monthly meetings were held, as well as, expected attendance for some church services as a group or individually for prayer time.

This parade took place on East Kleberg Street in Kingsville, Texas. From the political ad shown on the floor of the buggy, the parade took place sometime in the early 1950's when Allan Shivers was a candidate in the election for the governor of Texas.

Wedding picture of Jose Salazar and Amelia Pena. The photograph was taken on their honeymoon in Monterrey, Mexico shortly after their wedding. The wedding had taken place in Alice, Texas on June 25, 1944. Since Amelia had to pack her wedding dress in a suitcase, she would often comment when looking at her wedding photograph that it was upsetting to see herself in a wrinkled wedding dress!

Photograph of Jose Salazar taken in the 1930's. Jose's favorite attire was a business suit and a tie. He always enjoyed a dress-up occasion throughout his life. He never even considered attending Sunday morning church without a suit and a tie! Shopping for a new men's necktie was always a special delight! He also owned a nice collection of necktie clips and pins!!

Pictured on the bottom left is Roberto (Bobby) Benavides, Jr., Jose's grandson. Pictured on the bottom right is Irma (Salazar) Benavides, Jose's daughter. Jose was recognized as an honoree for his outstanding contribution to Kingsville in the field of business and a forerunner in the church and civic community. “The El Dorado Club began in 1957 with a group of young Kingsville men for the purpose of organizing a club that would give young college men of Kingsville a chance to participate in a primarily bi-cultural society. At the that time, no Spanish-speaking or Spanish surnamed student was invited to join the fraternities at Texas A & I College (now Texas A &M University at Kingsville)."

Jose Salazar, the third person standing from the right, was the first Mexican-American to become a member of the KISD School Board. Alfonso Salazar, first person standing on the right side, and Jose Salazar were first cousins and served as KISD board trustees. Photograph of Jose and Amelia Salazar taken on Christmas Day, December 25, 1986. The picture was taken in their home in Kingsville, Texas at 230 West Santa Gertrudis. That evening Jose was being recognized as an honoree at the El Dorado Club's 17th Annual Christmas Ball in Kingsville. One of Jose's biggest satisfactions in life as a business man was having the opportunity to help many families in Kingsville "improve their lot" in life by offering them credit at V. Salazar Store. Numerous families were able to keep their children in school during some difficult years because they were able to purchase needed clothing and other items on credit at the store.

Honoree: Jose Salazar. This photograph of Jose Salazar and his bibliography written on this page is taken from the program booklet presented to guests attending The El Dorado Club 17th Annual Christmas Ball on December 25, 1986. The El Dorado Club not only honored community leaders, but several high school seniors were also presented as debutantes. This annual event was a much anticipated event in the Hispanic community, especially when many families had relatives "back home" in Kingsville during the Christmas holidays to attend the El Dorado Christmas Ball. It gave the families a great sense of honor and pride to have a family member being recognized as a community leader or being presented as a debutante.

Honoree: Mrs. Amelia Salazar. The two pages shown in this photograph were part of the program booklet presented to guests attending the El Dorado's 31st Annual Christmas Ball on December 25, 1999. Amelia Salazar was one of four honorees being presented that evening as an outstanding citizens serving the community of Kingsville, TX. Amelia retired after teaching for 43 years in the schools of Jim Wells County, Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco, Premont, and Kingsville. She was a charter member of St. Martin's Catholic Daughters of America Court, former member of St. Martin's Altar Society, Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, Texas Retired Teachers Association, and American Association of University Women. She was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Kingsville, TX where she also taught Religious Education (CCD) for 25 years. Amelia was formerly associated with the family business, V. Salazar Store of Kingsville, TX.
