JoRene Newton was a long time resident of Kingsville, TX. Her parents were active in the community. Her father was a long time employee of Humble (later Exxon) Oil Company. Her mother was active in local clubs. JoRene received her education in art from a junior college in Missouri and graduated with a bachelors and Masters in Art from Texas College of Arts & Industries. She was asked to teach art at H.M. King High School when the high school was moved from its original home to its new facility on Brahma Blvd. She believed that students should actually “do” their art and worked to provide them with “real” experiences such as doing art shows to earn scholarship money; painting murals on the walls of a local car dealership, and at H.E.B. She later started the art program at Epiphany Episcopal Middle School.
The collection mainly consists of photographs taken of the work and activities of her high school and middle school classes. There are also notes and documents from her work with the Kingsville Action Network, created to restore the Flato Building in downtown Kingsville, and especially the Flato Opera House.
