Samuel Preston Doughty was born on October 17, 1913 in Robstown,Texas, the seventh child of William David Doughty and Sarah Hollie Turner Doughty. Preston graduated from Robstown High School and became the first of the Doughty children to attend college. He graduated with a B.A. in Business Administration from Texas College of Arts and Industries, (now Texas A&M –Kingsville) in 1935. On September 6, 1935, he married Gladys Katherine Simpson in the First Methodist Church of Corpus Christi. They had a son and a daughter, both of whom obtained doctorate degrees from the University of Texas. Their son, Sam, was an assistant professor at Texas A&I and Kay, their daughter, worked as a lawyer in Austin. Gladys passed away in February 1999 after 63 years of marriage. Doughty remarried in 2001 to LaJuan Leonard Doughty. Doughty worked in Robstown and Beeville ISD districts from 1933 to 1943. He then worked as an income agent for the Internal Revenue Service. In 1944 he enlisted in the Army of the United States serving two years in the Ordinance Department. Afterwards Doughty worked as an independent Certified Public Accountant. Doughty and his brother Roy started their own accounting practice in 1948. In 1953, Doughty founded Citizens Standard Life Insurance Company and served as President and Chairman of the Board. In 1966 he withdrew from the accounting practice to devote his full time and attention to his growing Life Insurance Company. Doughty’s civic involvement is also quite impressive. In 1955, he created an organization to obtain summer jobs for youths. He was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce of Corpus Christi and had been a member of various City Council provided service to the governing boards of the Red Cross, Boy Scouts and United Way. Doughty was active in the First United-Methodist Church and served as trustee on the board of Southwestern University. He was a member of the Corpus Christi Tourist Bureau, Navy League, Rotary Club, U.S. Army Retired Officers Association, Del Mar Nursing Advisory Council, the Nueces County Marriage Counseling Board and the Spohn Hospital Development Board. Doughty served as the treasurer during the campaign to elect Judge Bob Barnes to the U.S. Congress. He was president of Sales & Marketing Executives, International and a representative to the Coastal Bend Council of Governments. He was the recipient of the 1980 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Texas A&I University Alumni Association. Samuel Preston Doughty died on August 10, 2006 at the age of 92. Scope and Content

Samuel Preston Doughty Family Collection contains genealogy records, correspondence, financial papers, Reminiscences of J. Williamson Moses, Preston’s great grandfather and manuscripts. Family photographs from early 1900’s are present in the collection.
