Lawrence and Jeanelle Warburton were donors of the Gray and Jesse Golden Collection. The collection of over 2500 books was gathered over a fifty year period, first by the mother of Jeanelle Golden Warburton and then continued by Larry and Jeanelle Warbuton of Alice, Texas. Mrs. Golden was the head of the genealogy division of the State Library for many years and cherished her collection.
The Warburtons wanted to honor her by making her collection available for use. Lawrence H. Warburton Jr. was born in San Diego, California on September 6, 1926 to Lawrence and Estelane Warburton. He married Jeanelle Golden on September 3, 1955 in Austin, Texas. In his youth, he attended school in Freer, Texas, and also the Peacock Military Academy. In August 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Diego, California, where he attended boot camp and Quartermaster schools and was selected to participate in the Navy V-12 Program through which he attended the College of the Pacific in Stockton, California, and the University of California at Berkley.
Upon his discharge from the Navy, he entered the University of Texas at Austin from which he received a BBA degree in 1949 and a LLB in 1950. While at the University of Texas, he was elected Chief Justice of the Student Court and was a president of Alpha Omega. He also was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and the Silver Spurs. L.H. Warburton, Jr. opened his law office in Freer, Texas in 1950, where he practiced for four years before joining the Texas Attorney General's Office. He left the Attorney General’s Office to become an Assistant District Attorney of the 79th Judicial District from 1955 to 1960. In 1960 he joined the law firm of Perkins, Floyd and Davis and was associated with their successor firms. He became the senior partner of the firm of Warburton, Adami, McNeill, Paisley and Appell, P.C. and remained there until his retirement in the year 2000, after 50 years of practicing law.
Warburton was active in many civic organizations including the Gulf Coast Council Board of the Boy Scouts of America, the Board of Stewards of the First United Methodist Church of Alice, served as President of the Coastal Bend Bar Association and published papers in the "South Texas Historical Journal." Lawrence and Jeanelle had three sons, Patrick , William , and Lane Warburton. Jeanelle, preceded Lawrence in death on June 1, 2003. Lawrence passed away on June 8, 2010, he was 83 years old.
The Golden Collection includes such well known works as the complete set of seven volumes of the "Texas Catholic Heritage," with the index, by Dr. Carlos Castaneda. Also included are over 100 county histories, the collected works of J. Frank Dobie and the Folk Lore Series. There are numerous stories of ranches along with stories of outlaws and Texas Rangers. Included are works by Tom Lea, Eugene Barker, Walter Prescott Webb, H. Yoakum, Clarence Wharton, John Henry Brown and Carl Coke Rister. Research articles and notes by Larry Warburton concerning the "Plan of San Diego," are included in the records.
