Mary Margaret Gussett Ewert was born March 15, 1911 in Corpus Christi, TX to Horatio D. Columbus Gussett and Mary Henrietta Barnard Gussett. Norwich Bernard was her brother. Mary Margaret's father, Horatio, was the son of properous rancher and businessman Norwich Gussett. His family settled west of what is now Corpus Christi and the Gussettville Cemetery still exists on the Nueces River in Live Oak / San Patricio County. Horatio's father, Norwich, had challenged vested interests in 1800's Corpus Christi by opening port facilities on what is now called North Beach of Corpus Christi Beach. Mary Margaret served as secretary of the President of Texas A&I University in the 1930's, enjoyed a long-time friendship with Lyndon B. Johnson, working for the Democrat Party. She married Dr. Ewert in 1940. They had two sons, William Arthur and Henry Bernard. Mary Margaret was active in her community and served as Chairperson of City Zoning and Planning, President of the local Red Cross, was an officer in the Zonta Club, and a sponsor of Delta Theta Sorority (later ZTA). She was a member of the Epiphany Church and served on the committee to build the new Epiphany Church in Kingsville. Mary Margaret was active in the Garden Club, St. Anne's Guild, and the Women's Club. She was 93 when she died in 2004. Her brother Norwich lived to be 103.
Genealogical materials, personal and business letters and legal documents are included that tell of the projects, activities and concerns which Mary Margaret was involved. Scrapbooks and photographs highlight the celebrations and family times. Printed materials and newspapers were saved that chronicle the big events of the times during her life. Artifacts such as silverware, candelabras, a sword, and a walking cane were transferred to the John E. Conner Museum.
