Mary Lewis Scott Kleberg (1920-2009), the daughter of Dr. Z.T. Scott (1880-1964), donated this collection in 1984 to the South Texas Archives. She named it the Dr. Z.T. Scott Family Collection in honor of her father. Z.T. Scott. He was a physician that graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston in 1903. While a medical student residing in St. Mary's Hospital he was responsible for rescuing scores of patients trapped by the rising waters produced by the Galveston hurricane of 1900. His account was recorded in the book, “The Great Galveston Diaster.” His mother died of tuberculosis and Dr. Scott dedicated his life to treating TB. He established the Austin Sanitarium, was the first director of the Texas Tuberculosis Association and instituted the sale of tuberculosis seals in Texas. During World War I Scott served as a lieutenant commander in the navy and was in charge of a unit at the naval hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi. After the war Scott and Frank C. Gregg established the Scott-Gregg Clinic in Austin in 1923.
Scott retired from his practice in 1947 and began breeding cattle on a farm near Buda; he crossed Santa Gertrudis with Herefords for a new breed he called San Gerfords. Scott married Sallie Lee Masterson on June 2, 1909. Mary Lewis Scott married Richard M. “Dick” Kleberg in 1940 moving to Kingsville for the reminder of her life. They had four children: Richard M. “Tres” Kleberg III, Stephen J. “Tio” Kleberg, Scott Kleberg and Sally Kleberg. Mary Lewis Scott Kleberg was known for her generosity and philanthropy. Some of the many organizations to which she gave her time and support included the Ecumenical Center for Religion and Health, Trinity University, San Antonio Botanical Center, San Antonio Museum of Art, the founding director of KEDT, the public television and radio stations, The Texas State Aquarium and the Spohn Hospice Program.
This collection contains 46 photographs mostly pertaining to Mary Kleberg’s mother, Sallie Masterson (Exum), side of the family. There are several scrapbooks, genealogical essays, biographical essays of the Masterson side of the family. There are genealogical and biographical essays on King, Kenedy, Kleberg and Scott families. There are publications from the Cattleman, Amarillo Fat Stock Show, and Texas Heritage. This collection contains 7 books that are concerned Texas History of schools, the Texas Republic and Texas ranch life. One book was authored by Z.T. Scott and Robert Benjamin Masterson entitled, “Pioneer Ranchman of the Texas Panhandle: A Character Sketch.”
