In 1986 Alvaro de Hoyos, riding a mule, crossed the mountainous territory of Iturbide, Nuveo Leon, Mexico with a thermos of polio vaccine attached to his saddle as part of the Mexican National Polio-Vaccination Campaign, conducted under the auspices of UNICEF, in January and March of 1986. Avaro de Hoyos lives in San Diego, Texas. His sister is Marlene de Hoyos Garza and her husband is Carlos Garza.
Alvaro de Hoyos Papers include a photo copy of a five page letter written in Spanish concerning a land deed involving the Garza, Villareal, and Cabazos families. Also included is an article written about Alvaro de Hoyos’ journey to Mexico with the polio vaccine. A photograph of Candido Flores and Julia Flores (de Garza) dated, March 3, 1883, is part of the collection.
