Historical or Biographical Information

The Molina Family dates back to earliest Texas history when Juanita Balli Molina’s ancestor, Jose Nicolas Balli was the first owner of Padre Island and a member of a pioneering Spanish family that settled Reynosa, Mexico while exploring a large part of what is now South Texas. Although several family members have moved from the Duval County area, where they have deep roots, most have returned and become politically and socially active in their community. Tom H. Molina served as the General Inspector in the Texas Department of Agriculture for 20 years, retiring in 1984. The senior Tomas Molina was on the County Commissioners Court, but opposed the Duke of Duval, George Parr, and had a difficult financial time for a while. Sylvia Molina was the first in the family to attend college and taught in Okinawa and Germany before returning to the Corpus Christi area. Rosi Molina Barrera married and stayed in the Benavides, TX area where her husband is a rancher. Tommy Molina worked throughout Texas and South America before returning to Duval County. All have been interested in baseball and accumulated a large number of photos and documents about the history of baseball in South Texas.

Processing Information

The Tomas Molina Collection was donated to the South Texas Archives & Special Collection by Tomas Molina in 2002. The collection had been stored at the Duval County Museum but not processed. The original processing of the collection included three separate inventories, with three separate lists of photographs, for unknown reasons. Negatives were not separated from positives, and over 200 images were not processed, most likely due to the fact that they were in color, and were taken after the year 1980. In reconstructing the collection for access, it was unclear whether the negative or the positives were the original accessions. Therefore, negatives are designated with an 'A' sub-fix, and positives with the 'B' sub-fix, which may appear that there are significant gaps between the negatives and positives.
