Historical or Biographical Information

Anse Windham was born March 6, 1938 in West Monroe, Louisiana and joined the US Navy at the age of eighteen. Anse met Mary in 1960 in San Benito, Texas and they were married in 1963 and had two children Linda and Brealon. During his career in the Navy, Anse was stationed aboard the USS Hornet when the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 recovery mission as an air traffic controller. After retiring in 1978 Anse continued working at the Naval Air Station in Kingsville as a civilian air traffic controller. Mary volunteered with the Red Cross at the Naval Air Station, worked for American Greeting Cards and Hallmark as a merchandiser and was employed as the coordinator of the volunteers for the Visitor’s Bureau in Kingsville. For her services she received a “Key to the City” award. Mary also volunteered her time at the Coastal Plains Community Center. Both Anse and Mary were active members of the Lions Club; he served on the Navy League Board. He died in 2014. Brealon (Buddy) lives in the Kingsville area with his family and works for Roll Royce and is a member of the Navy League. Linda works for an investment and insurance firm in Yadkinville, North Carolina with her husband and children.

Scope and Content

The material covers Anse Windham’s time in the Navy. These materials include photographs of the recovery of the Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 space capsules. There are several other photos of various themes around the Coastal Bend area taken from the pilot’s seat of an airplane Anse was flying.
