Historical or Biographical Information

Hosea Bush was a brakeman and conductor for Missouri Pacific Railroad from 1941 until retiring in 1984. He served as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen of America, a Black union from the 1950s to the 1970s. Bush was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of St. Paul AME Church. He served his country, church and his union and worked for the betterment of his Black union members. Hosea Bush was a married man and had a family in Kingsville, Texas. He died on October 14, 1989 in a Houston Hospital.

Scope and Content

Included in this collection of union records are the 1947 Constitution, the Union Code of Operating Rules, Agreements, and Grievances of members, correspondence concerning the Job Benefit Fund, strike benefit payments, membership dues, and insurance matters. Timetables of the railroad dating from 1950s to 1970s are includes along with reports on derailments and personal accidents.
