Historical or Biographical Information

Rogelio Agrasanchez Jr., of Harlingen, Texas, is the owner and curator of the Agrasanchez Film Archive in Harlingen. He was introduced to the world of Cine-Mexicano by his father, Rogelio Agrasanchez, Sr. who worked in movie production and distribution in Mexico and Texas from the 1960s to the 1980s. Towards the end of his career Agrasanchez, Sr. began collecting film and memorabilia of Mexican cinema to preserve. He would transfer film negatives of many of the classic movies to video to be shown on Spanish-language television stations. His son, Rogelio, Jr. began to take an interest at the time he was a graduate student at the University of Texas in the late 1980s. He began his own collection. During his time at the University of Texas, Rogelio Agrasanchez, Jr. met Charles Ramirez Berg, a professor in the Department of Radio, Television, and Film. Ramirez Berg taught a class on the history of Mexican cinema. They collaborated on two books showcasing images of Cine-Mexicano posters with narrative on plot, actors, and the history of Mexican cinema. Later Rogelio Agrasanchez Jr. published several books of his own on horror cinema posters, Mexican women actresses, and Mexican movies in the United States.

Scope and Content

Since the silent era, scores of Spanish-speaking moviegoers living in the United States have had a penchant for Mexican movies, which have provided them with an identity, contact with their national roots, and entertainment. The Agrasanchez Film Collection contains film stills, posters, postcards, reels, and documents, from Spanish language Mexican films shown in South Texas throughout the 20th century. The movie posters include Acapulco (Elsa Aguirre, Armando Calvo, Miguel Torruco) 1951, Aenturas de un caballo blanco y un niño (Andrés García, Susana Dosamantes, Rafael Baledon, Víctor Junco, Ahui Camacho) 1973, Chicoasen 'Obra de gigantes' (Julio Aldama, Narciso Busquets , Bruno Rey, José Carlos Ruiz) 1978, and Mas negro que la noche (Claudia Islas, Susana Dosamantes, Lucia Méndez, Helena Rojo, Pedro Armendáriz, Julián Pastor) 1974 to name just a few. Film strips from the trailer to “Corona de Lagrimas” were accessioned in 2006, along with other related materials. Many other movie stills are included in the collection. In addition 253 lobby or window cards, which were small movie posters used as advertisements, are part of the Agrasanchez Film Collection given to South Texas Archives by Rogelio Agrasanchez Jr.
