Luman Henry Lord was born in East Windsor, Harford, Connecticut in 1833, the oldest of seven children with two sisters and four brothers. He worked with his parents, Luman Stoddard and Dorcas Osborne Fish Lord on their tobacco farm until his enlistment in the Union Army in 1861. He was assigned as a private in Company K of the Twelfth Regiment of the Connecticut Volunteers also known as the “Charter Oak Regiment.” The regiment was organized for a special service as part of the New England Division. The volunteers were commanded by Colonel Henry C. Deming. Lord and the regiment of 1,008 men left Connecticut on February 24, 1862 and traveled to New York and later to Ship Island, Mississippi. The Twelfth Connecticut Volunteers became the first Union army to occupy a Confederate fort when they occupied Fort Jackson, and the first Union regiment to emerge before New Orleans. He served two enlistments in the army and was wounded at Port Hudson in June 1863. After returning from the War he married Carolina Minerva Fish in 1870. They had three children, Byron Henry, Leon Henry and Lena Minerva. He passed away on 4 Mar 1906 in Tongas, Maine, USA.
