The creator of this collection is Robert Boyd Ladd. He was born in Driscoll, Texas. He graduated from Texas A&I in 1935 and again in 1939 majoring in mathematics. His post-graduate work was in public administration and statistics at both George Washington University and the University of Southern California. Mr. Ladd had a distinguished career serving on the faculties of UT-Austin, Johns Hopkins and Nova University, and managing the Southwest Research Institute. He has also held many executive positions within professional and civic organizations. He has been an avid supporter of his alma mater (Texas A&I) and was named as the 1990 Distinguished Alumnus. At the time of donation, he works and resides in Washington D. C. where he operates his own consulting firm. The main contributor to the collection is Pauline Schostag Ladd. She and A. R. (Arlington Ringold) Ladd were the parents of Robert Boyd Ladd. Mrs. Ladd was born in DeWitt County Texas on 12-12-1881. She moved to Bishop, Texas in 1912 to teach school after having graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. She was married in 1914 to A. R. who was the Bishop School District Superintendent at the time. Mrs. Ladd lived most of her life on the family farm near Driscoll and worked in the area as a teacher and later for the school district administration. At the time of her death, 1-21-90, she was the oldest living graduate from The University of Texas at Austin. She died at the age of 108 years.
The Ladd Family Collection consists primarily of personal correspondence between various family members. The correspondence takes place mostly during the 20th century but there are a few letters and cards dated in the latter half of the 19th century with some written in German. The collection also documents most of the educational achievements of the family, and includes many of the diplomas and certificated. The second largest component of the collection is the photographs, spanning the entire timeline of the collection, 1861 to 1988. There are 464 photographs, most with descriptions. This does not include those photographs specific to the 100th Birthday Celebration of Pauline Ladd that are in a separate series of the same name.
