UNIVERSITY HISTORY

The State
Archives Division of the Texas State Library administers the
regional historical resource depository system and is
responsible for collecting, preserving, and making available
to researchers historical records of state government
agencies, counties, and other local governments of Texas.
The regional historical
resource depository system was established by law in 1971 to
provide for the preservation of local historical materials in
the region of their origin or interest. Seventeen public and
private universities, one junior college, and five public
libraries around the state provide physical facilities for the
archival preservation of local government records in both
hard-coy and microfilm. The Texas State Library itself and
its wholly owned research facility, the Sam Houston Regional
Library and Research Center in Liberty, also serve as regional
historical resource depositories.
Original local government records,
including court dockets and case papers, brand books, poll
lists, election records, and minute books, are available for
research at the depositories. The Sam Houston Regional
Library and Research Center also houses a significant
collection of historical manuscripts relating to the
Atascosita District and other aspects of Texas history.

How to Order
Microfilm
Microfilm may be borrowed,
subject to the policies on page 8 [of Texas County
Records: Guide to the Holdings of the Local Records
Division of the Texas State Library of County Records on
Microfilm] through any public or private library in
the United States or Canada that provides interlibrary
loan services. Requests should be sent to the institution
housing the film -- in this case the South Texas Archives
for the counties listed above.
In requesting film,
provide the reel number, the number of the county, and the
title of the records. For example, if you wish to obtain
the microfilm reel containing Birth Records for 1912-1946
for Kenedy County, you would order:
Reel
2032038 Kenedy County Birth Record,
1912-1946
Requests are
filled promptly, but if a reel is on loan to another
researcher, it may take 2-3 weeks to fill your order.
For
ordering, use the address provided in our
contact page. |
