Di·as·po·ra (d - s p r- ):
n. A dispersion of a people from their original
homeland.*
Hurricane Katrina was one of the most powerful storms to ever
strike the United States. The storm made landfall along
the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida
between August 25 and August 29, 2005. This storm was
one of the most disastrous events in American history.
Not only did the storm cause an enormous amount of deaths, but
the storm left hundreds of thousands of Americans homeless.
These fellow Americans have been dispersed to communities
throughout this nation. Some of these survivors have
relocated to Kingsville, Texas. Here, they will begin a
process of starting over.
In order to preserve the accounts of the survivors of this
terrible event, the Department of History at Texas A&M
University-Kingsville is organizing the Hurricane Katrina
Diaspora Project. This project will include the oral
histories of survivors that relocated to Kingsville and the
surrounding area.
