Proud Past - Promising Future
In 1950 the Memorial Student Union Building opened following a twelve year campaign by students, faculty and towns people who worked to finance this project. The new SUB was to house offices of the student government, and provide other services for students.
Also in 1950 a new administration building, which included a new home for the library, was opened. The campus was being planned to grow to the north and west and when the new building opened it was located in almost isolation. Today it is the central point of the campus and no longer houses the library.
To house the returning veterans that were not accommodated on the new East Campus, two identical dorms were constructed in the southeast corner of the campus, near where the original dorms had been constructed in 1935. Baugh Hall was to house women. Today it houses the South Texas Archives. May Hall housed men. Other buildings were planned and built during the decade following the end of World War II. |
