(A1985-040), (A1990-022), (A1998-008)

Abstract:

Conrad Meuly von Blucher was born in Corpus Christi on June 20, 1885 to C. F. H. von Blucher and Mary E. (Meuly) Blucher. He married Zula E. Hill on October 1, 1938. He is the descendent of two men who figure in Texas history, Conrad Meuly, a member of the Texan Santa Fe expedition of 1841 and Anton Felix Hans Hellmuth von Blucher, who was the interpreter for John O. Meusebach's Comanche treaty and later for General Winfield Scott in South Texas and an important surveyor in South Texas. Conrad M. Blucher attained a Civil Engineering degree in 1906 and worked for his father in the Blucher Engineering Company of Corpus Christi until he became the owner of the company in 1928. He was elected to the position of Nueces County Surveyor from 1934 until 1946, a position his father previously held for more than fifty years. Conrad M. Blucher was a member of local and national professional and service organizations and a veteran of World War I. Conrad M. Blucher died at the age of 92 years in 1977.

The Conrad M. Blucher Collection totals approximately 17 cubic feet of material. The bulk of the material, about 12 cubic feet, is split between personal and business correspondence ranging from 1880's to the 1960's and financial records from approximately 1906 to 1969 mostly in the form of ledgers. There are diaries that span from 1905 to 1954 and describe in detail personal and business related events. The maps and blueprints in the collection date from 1896 through the 1950's, with one or two undated maps possibly being from as early as the 1860's or 1870's. There are also books, printed materials and newspaper clipping related to the surveying work done by Blucher.

Creator Sketch

Conrad Meuly von Blucher was born in Corpus Christi on June 20, 1885 to C. F. H. von Blucher and Mary E. (Meuly) Blucher. He married Zula E. Hill on October 1, 1938. He is the descendent of two men who figure in Texas history. On his mother's side he is a descendent of Conrad Meuly, who was a member of the Texan Santa Fe expedition of 1841. Conrad M. Blucher is also the descendent of Anton Felix Hans Hellmuth von Blucher, who was the interpreter for John O. Meusebach's Comanche treaty and later for General Winfield Scott in South Texas. Felix von Blucher was also in important surveyor in Nueces and other Counties in South Texas.

Conrad M. Blucher attended the University of Texas and received a B.S. in 1905 and a Civil Engineering degree in 1906. He worked for his father in the Blucher Engineering Company of Corpus Christi as a surveyor and engineer from 1906 until he became the owner of the company in 1928. He also followed his father's footsteps by being elected to the position of Nueces County Surveyor from 1934 until 1946, a position his father held for more than fifty years. Conrad M. Blucher died at the age of 92 years in 1977.

Conrad M. Blucher was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Corpus Christi City Planning and Zoning Commission, several service organizations and local social clubs. He was also a veteran of World War I, where he served as an officer in the Engineer Corps in France.

Scope and Content Note

The Conrad M. Blucher Collection totals approximately 17 cubic feet of material. The bulk of the material, about 12 cubic feet, is split between personal and business correspondence and financial records. The correspondence range from the late 1880's up to the 1960's with most of the letters from around 1905 to the late 1930's.

The personal correspondence contains many letters from members, relatives and friends of the Hill family. The Hill family is related to Conrad M. Blucher by marriage through his spouse, Zula E. (Hill) Blucher.

The financial records run from approximately 1906 to 1969 and are mostly in the form of ledgers and other book-like formats with the majority of them documenting the workings of the Blucher Engineering Company.

One of the smaller portions of the collection is the diaries. They span from 1905 to 1954 and describe in detail personal and business related events; from daily observations of the weather, to distances traveled and situations encountered while surveying in the brush, to social events and those who attended them.

The maps and blueprints in the collection date from 1896 through the 1950's, with one or two undated maps possibly being from as early as the 1860's or 1870's. Many of the maps are plats of portions of Nueces County and Corpus Christi and they show the development of the residential portion quite vividly.

The remaining material, mostly books, printed materials and newspaper clippings relate to surveying and engineering work. There are books and catalogs about surveying and its instruments and newspaper clippings about surveying in Texas.
