"At the 50th anniversary celebration of then Texas A&I University, Dr. George Coalson, chairman of the history department, accepted for his department the task of writing the history of the school for its 75th anniversary celebration. Unfortunately, Dr. Coalson, who had first come to the school as an undergraduate in 1946, and later returned as a professor in 1955, died before he could begin the project. Thus in 1996 as the 75th anniversary approached, University President Manuel Ibáñez approached us, Leslie Gene Hunter, Regents Professor of History, and Cecilia Aros Hunter, archivist at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, to write the official history of the school. He set no limits, no boundaries. He asked us to look at the documents and produce a history that would tell the story of the successes, failures, and struggles of the university."
