James Andrew "Jimmie" Dodd was born on July 20, 1917 in Houston, Texas to Earle Bartholomew and Ellen Belle (Horan) Dodd. Jimmie Dodd grew up in Kingsville. In 1935, he opened his photography studio at 309 W. Kleberg in Kingsville, Texas. In 1945 his father Earle B. Dodd started the Kingsville Camera Club of which Jimmie was a member.

During his career Jimmie Dodd had the opportunity to take photographs of presidents, governors and movie stars. His photographs of golf and its players earned him honorary membership in the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA). Locally he took numerous photographs of the highlights of Kingsville Brahma and Texas A&I Javelina football games. His work encompasses all of the subjects that a photographer would be asked to capture on film in and around Kingsville: community, academic and social events, portraits, weddings and parades. He also took many photographs on the King Ranch from the mid-1930s through the 1950s. Dodd was also the photographer for the Kingsville Police Department and took photographs related to police duties: automobile accidents and building fires. Jimmie Dodd left Kingsville during the early 1970s and died at his home in Kerrville, Texas on January 27, 1984 at the age of 66 years old.

The Jimmie Dodd Photograph Collection totals 902 photographs, spanning from 1906 to 1964 but with more than half of the photographs not dated. Of the photographs with dates, the bulk of them were taken in the late 1940s and early 1950s. All but a very few photographs deal with subjects in and around Kingsville, Texas: its people, places and events.
